Reporting incidents gets results – real life example relating to homophobic verbal abuse
A manager of a pub in Oxford refused to serve two people as they were clearly intoxicated. One of the drunk men became abusive and threatening and refused to leave the premises. As the manager was calling the police, the drunk man made numerous homophobic remarks about the manager to other staff and members of the public. Police officers arrived at the pub within 20 minutes of the call and arrested the offender.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided to charge the offender with a Public Order Offence with the homophobic remarks as an aggravated factor. The offender appeared in court where he was found guilty. He was fined £100 and had to pay £50 in court costs. He had to pay a £15 fine to victim and was given an exclusion order for 12 months from the pub where the offence took place.
