What is an incident?

Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic incidents

Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic incidents are motivated by the perpetrators’ fear, dislike or hatred of gay men, lesbians, bisexual or transgender people respectively.

Examples of such incidents include physical assault, verbal abuse, malicious text messages and graffiti.

Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic incidents can happen anywhere - in school, in a person’s own home, in the workplace, on the street. It doesn’t matter if the perpetrator targets someone who doesn’t actually identify themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender; it’s considered an incident just the same and should be reported.

It’s really important that people report incidents. To find out more about what you can expect from the Police if you report an incident to them, please see ‘what to expect from the Police’.

If you want to tell somebody about a homophobic, biphobic or transphobic incident but would rather not go straight to the Police, you can contact Oxfordshire’s HALT. They can provide you with support and help you report the incident to the police if you want to.
