On 26th May 2011, in association with Oxford Brookes University, HALT hosted a very successful Homophobic Hate Crime Seminar. The lead speaker was Baljit Ubhey OBE, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Steve Rowell, Thames Valley Police’s Assistant Chief Constable (TVP) also spoke as did Cheryl Reeves one of HALT’s partners and Shared Equality Officer for South Oxfordshire and Vale of the White Horse. Maz Yaqoob, Hate Crime lead for Oxfordshire and Mark Franklin, Community and Diversity Office contributed as did several other representatives of the CPS and TVP.
A moving address by Jenny, a serving Police officer about her own experiences of homophobic abuse opened the Seminar which was later the lead story on BBC Oxford news. A number of interesting questions and comments from the audience gave the CPS and Police further food for thought. The event was chaired by Clive Dellow, the Administrator/Co-ordinator for HALT.
